I took yet another day off to participate in the train wreck that is my mother’s life. Today was the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal hearing. Bottom line – instead of $9,100 in damages and an immediate eviction, my mom and sister can move out on Aug 15 and pay $1,347.25. Apparently this figure represents the cost of the doors which *must* be replaced in order to meet firecodes. Ya – right – like they’re going to bother replacing them. Whatever. It worked out ok overall – considering the potential for a $9,100 payout if the tribunal member – Babatunde Olokun- turned out to be hugely pro landlord (the duty counsel had only worked with him twice before, and didn’t have a good read on him – but he lost all his cases last time he was up before him).
Moral of the story: Mom fucked up, she’ll have to pay the consequences. It just sucks that we all get to pay the consequences too. Especially my sister.
… Oh ya, Neil, our Duty Counsel, said that Lorelei Andrews (legal representative for Melchior Management) is a reasonable person and we should be able to negotiate with her. Sorry, but I don’t find a damages claim for $9,100 and a sensationalized account of the events on an eviction application to be “reasonable”. That said, we did negotiate. But after the agreement, she could not look at us. Interesting. I looked at her, though. It’s hard not to look at a fat woman in a bright green shiny dress – even though you wish you could avert your eyes.
